      <image:title>Blog - Muscle as Medicine - You have the right to build your body armour (skeletal muscle) that will help protect you for the rest of your life! My approach to training prioritises MUSCLE AS MEDICINE and training as mandatory. Eating protein alone will not stimulate muscle protein synthesis that your body needs, we need to stress our muscles with a workout programme that prioritises disease prevention, building strong, lean muscle tissue and overall good health. By recognising muscle as the organ for longevity provides a clear and simple message, that we need to move and use our muscles. I quote Dr Lyon, "movement is as important as brushing your teeth", so using our muscles needs to be a daily ritual whether it be a brisk walk, swimming or a strength training session. We all know that achy feeling of sitting in a chair for too long on a plane or at a desk, it is our body's way of telling us that it wants to move because it wasn't designed to sit down all day. Without exercise, muscle glycogen (stored glucose in the muscles) over spills from the muscles tissue, like an overpacked suitcase. Whereas when we exercise our body's use our stored muscle glycogen (glycogen is a preferred fuel source during high-intensity exercise). Testosterone, growth hormone and essential amino acids all directly contribute to skeletal muscle and muscle growth. Exercise stimulates these growth affects. As we age, testosterone and growth hormones decline leaving lifestyle exercise as the only natural way to increase and maintain previous levels (linking back to why we cannot eat protein alone to stimulate muscle protein synthesis). The more muscle tissue you have, the healthier you are for old age! Amino acids are the gas in the tank used during muscle contraction to build new muscle tissue, this is why eating the right amino acids for your body is essential to maintain and build healthy muscle mass. So essentially, you want to be building your body of armour, being muscle, NOW to prepare for old age!</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Weight Resistance Training for Older Woman - If you are questioning whether weight resistance training is right you or not, read this blog to learn about how weights can benefit your physical health as we age… The mechanical strain of ligament on bone with weighted workouts prevents the deterioration of Osteoporosis, essentially bone deterioration. Imagery: it is like pulling motion on the bone that stops the bone deterioration in its tracks. It is particularly important woman in their forties and fifties to be in the gym at this stage in life, because throughout life, every week the end of your bones regenerate themselves with Osteoblasts (bone rebuilding cells) and Osteoclasts (bone destroying cells) by 7%, which is an even amount of degeneration and repair (regenerating your bones). However when you hit the menopause and experience reduced Oestrogen levels in the body, the Osteoclasts (bone destroying cells) multiply ten times, so the body is now destroying bones by 70% and still only repairing bones by 7%. So now your at high risk of developing Osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) and the only thing that has proven to stop Osteoporosis in its tracks is the mechanical strain of ligament on bone. Studies show that strength training over a period of time can help prevent bone loss -and may even help build new bone. One study found that postmenopausal women who participated in a strength training program for a year saw significant increases in their bone density in the spine and hips, areas affected most by Osteoporosis in older women. Weight resistance training cannot reverse bone damage but a good resistance programme can stop the continuing of Osteoporosis.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - How to get Lean Muscle? - A high quality protein diet and strength training are the most effective was to get lean muscle, reduce body fat, balance out hormones and sculpt the body… Let’s start with training…why is strength training so effective at burning fat? Trying to lose body fat by manually burning calories such as running is an ineffective strategy in comparison to weight lifting. Our bodies are good at adapting to burn calories because it is always trying to maintain homeostasis. Your body is not going to make you leaner unless it is at it’s best interest (from a survival point of view). Exercise tells your body to adapt in a particular way…lots of cardio tells your body to build endurance and burn some calories. Endurance does not involve a lot of muscular strength. The body is a calorie efficient burning machine… so the body will learn to burn less calories or the roughly the same amount of calories, you could perhaps call a plateau, when experiencing repetitive exercises i.e. running. A runners body becomes very efficient at burning calories. A research study taken out of a Hunter &amp; Gather tribe in Hadza Tribe found out that the Hadza Tribe, despite walking or running between ten to twenty miles a day, burnt roughly the same amount of calories as an Office Worker. This was possible because from an evolutionary stand point, the Hadza Tribe peoples’ metabolisms had adapted to their taxing energy requirements of the body, so their metabolisms had become more efficient for survival by essentially slowing down. So to put it bluntly, lots of cardio and low calorie diets are ineffective ways for getting lean muscle. Strength Training! Strength training or weight lifting creates metabolically proactive tissue which speeds up the metabolism. The process of building muscle shifts the metabolism into becoming less efficient at burning calories, because you are burning more calories to survive which leads to body fat loss! Muscle takes up three fourths of the space fat does, so you can weigh the same but be a much smaller and stronger person. So how can we gain lean muscle tissue? 1. Eat more protein: protein fuels muscle and speeds up the metabolism and it is very satiating producing. 2. Strength training: include strength training sessions into your week, aim for perfecting skill of exercise before increasing weight i.e. squat with good technique and form and you’ll get ten times more from your results. These two combined creates a youthful growth hormone and makes you feel healthy (strength training stimulates the release of the human growth hormone, which aids in building muscle and burning fat).</image:title>

      <image:caption>Battling with health issues throughout my teens, I made a complete U-turn when I embarked on a raw food course held in Jersey, when I was just 17 years old. At the time raw food was a fairly new concept. The 5 day raw food course completely changed my mindset and understanding about health, being that food and exercise can be the used as medicine and a key to optimal health. Today, my diet is certainly not 100% raw, but this was a good place to start, learning to appreciate food at its purest and as a form of medicine. Now I do not claim to have a certain way of eating, but do follow how our ancestors would have eaten, being a diet of mostly animal proteins and fibrous carbohydrates.</image:caption>
